Make a plan for your job hunt -
Make a plan for your job hunt - Today, I spoke to a client. He mentioned that, since he had decided to hire me and we had a plan in place to move forward, he felt much better about his job search plans and not so hurried or hectic. I told him I thought that was a great topic for a blog post! Do you find that just having a plan makes it easier to think about a big task? Sometimes, making the plan work involves partnering with an expert. I am a big proponent of hiring someone to help me when Im trying to do something that is not my forte. In fact, I mentioned to my client my story about painting my house. While I *could* have painted (the inside) myself, it would have taken me a lot longer and the results would not have been as good as they were when I hired a professional. (You should have seen my painters painting trim they didnt even use tape!) Stay tuned for tips to help you plan your job hunt, but today, I thought it would be fun to share one of my hired some experts and didnt regret it stories from the archives! Hope its a good reminder for you! This week, Im having my house painted. Inside and out fresh paint, new colors. It has been a while. My friends know that this has been a long time in coming. Ive been talking about painting for months! The first obstacle picking colors! For the interior decorators among you, this may be hard to believe, but choosing colors for several key rooms in the house seemed like an overwhelming problem. What if it looked bad? What needed to match? Or not match? I had no interest in making a mistake in my home. What did I finally do? I hired an expert. Laura came in with her paint swatches, asked me what I liked and proceeded to explain what she would recommend. She has seen the colors she recommended to me in many, many homes. On the walls! I trusted her ideas and knew I could move forward confidently. But, that wasnt all. I still had a few choices to make. I needed to buy some samples and see how I liked them on the walls. But, being too busy (I really am busy how do you think this blog gets written?!), I procrastinated. For a long time. It wasnt until the painter I had said I would hire called back to check in that I finally went to work on making final color selections. It was easier to TALK about making a change than it was to actually make a change. Surprise! Does this sound like you? Not about painting, but about your job hunt? Is it overwhelming to even think about starting? I hired someone to help me (trying to take my own advice to hire an expert). Should you do the same thing? Think about it you can sit around and procrastinate or you can take some action! Even when I had my professional advice, I still needed to actually take action and move forward. The same is true for you. No matter what, you will need to take steps to move forward. The fact is, nothing was going to get painted in my house unless I made a conscious choice and took a bit of a chance.Ã Nothing happens without action. What action are you taking to move your job hunt forward? (Dont miss my post: six tips to help you from being overwhelmed by your job hunt to help get you started!) photo by caveman

Women More Likely to Ask For Raises, Less Likely to Get Them
Women More Likely to Ask For Raises, Less Likely to Get Them Hey career coaches, guess what: You can stop telling women they need to ask for more raises to close the gender pay gap. A new study shows that women do ask for plenty of raises, only it doesnât help. According to a new study of Australian women, female employees are just as likely than their male counterparts to pipe up and ask for raises. The problem is that these women are then less likely to actually get raises compared to men. âWomen do ask. However, women do not get,â the researchers wrote. They said this is an important distinction to make, since the narrative that women arenât getting raises because theyâre not asking for them kind of puts the blame on the women themselves for not earning more, and dodges the question of whether workplace sexism plays a role. The researchers behind the new study said the evidence bolsters the case that sexism, rather than female reticence, is the culprit. âSuch a finding is potentially consistent with the existence of discrimination in the labor market,â they wrote. The study did find that the youngest generation of women in the workforce today are getting more traction with their requests for raises, according to the New York Times. But meanwhile, there are indications that some workplaces in corporate America still have a long way to go. Even being famous and influential isnât enough to shield women from the effects of workplace sexism, according to a CNN/Money report about Fox News anchor Greta Van Susterenâs abrupt departure from the network, which included not only taking her off the air, but deleting her biography and her blog from the networkâs website. The reason, according to the report, is that she dared to ask for a raise. â[Rupert] Murdoch, the patriarch of Foxâs parent company 21st Century Fox, disliked her recent attempt to renegotiate her contract,â CNN reported. (Fox declined to comment for the story.) Read Next: 6 Excuses for the Gender Pay Gap You Can Stop Using The allegation is unlikely to help Fox Newsâ reputation, which has been dogged by sexism and harassment accusations that ultimately led to former head Roger Ailesâ resignation.

Careers In Health How To Become A Speech Therapist - Work It Daily
Careers In Health How To Become A Speech Therapist - Work It Daily Speech therapy is slated to be one of the fastest growing professions in the USA. Also known as a Speech Language Pathologist, a speech therapist helps people with a variety of speech and cognitive disorders. Such people may not understand what other people are saying or have difficulties making other people understand what they are saying due to inborn or acquired difficulties with language, articulation, fluency, and resonance. Therefore, the main job of a speech therapist is to improve the communication skills of patients through vocal exercises and cognitive therapies. If you're looking into careers in health, perhaps this job is right for you. Do You Require Any Certifications? Having an educational degree is not enough to land a job as a speech therapist. You must also be certified as one. After obtaining your degree, you should enroll yourself in a clinical fellowship training program, then pass the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) held by ASHA. As different states may have different laws, you may also have to acquire additional certifications as required by the state of your domicile. Do You Require Any License? Depending upon your state of residence, you may be required to obtain a license before you can work as a speech therapist. Beside your educational qualifications, you need to have the ASHA-accredited CCC-SLP to obtain a license in most states. Some states also accept the equivalent Canadian certification provided by the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA). There are different levels of licenses and you will have to pass the required examination for each level to be able to practice your trade. Why Choose This Career? As a speech therapist, you will have employment opportunities in private practices, hospitals, clinics, schools, rehabilitation centers, care facilities, federal government agencies, local government health departments, long-term care facilities and other healthcare agencies. Most speech therapists are employed by private practices. You may also start your own practice if you are up to it. In the USA, the median annual income of a qualified speech therapist is between $53,000 and $65,000. However, the top speech therapists can make upwards of $80,000 annually, which makes it a lucrative career, indeed. What Education Do You Require? To become a qualified speech therapist, you will need to have at least graduate level education. The degree preferred by most employers is a master's degree in speech-language pathology with a specified number of supervised hours and one year of field experience. For undergraduate majors, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recommends a strong foundation in liberal arts with course works in behavioral science, linguistics, psychology, anatomy, general sciences and math. If you are interested in working as a researcher or college professor, you may require a Ph.D. What Qualities Do You Need To Become Successful? You may easily get a job as a speech therapist with your education and certifications, but that is no guarantee of success in the field. To become successful, you will need to have qualities like tolerance, patience, sensitivity, persistence, and commitment. You must also have a genuine interest in your chosen profession accompanied by a general love for people and interest in improving their well being. As in any other medical profession, success will open the doors to recognition and a higher salary. Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

The Best Way to Tell a Sick Coworker to Go Home
The Best Way to Tell a Sick Coworker to Go Home Tis the season for sickness colds, flus, coughs and a multitude of mysterious maladies seem inescapable this year. What can you do about that symphony of coughing is coming from the next cubicle over? Here are some tips to politely and professionally deal with sick co-workers and let them know that, really, they should have called in sick. How to Handle a Sick Co-Worker1. Make Your Work Space Germ FreeThe first step in handling a sick co-worker in the office is to first make your own work space a germ free haven. This will help you to avoid getting sick and also help to avoid spreading any illness to other employees at the office. Take action by wiping down your desk, computer and anything you touch on a regular basis - pens, armrests, mouse pads and drawer handles with a disinfectant every single day. Be sure to wash your hands regularly and keep a bottle of hand sanitizer on your desk as a backup germ killer for post handshakes or for after signing a greeting card thats been passed from hand to hand.2. Clean the Common AreasAfter youve created your germ-free workspace, consider taking steps to thwart the spread of illness in common areas. Printers, door handles, shared refrigerators and even the office coffee machine can easily become hiding grounds for germs that can make you and your co-workers sick. Speak with your employer about its practices to double up the cleaning of common areas during the sickness season. You can also consider minimizing your usage of office common areas if it seems your employer isnt doing enough to keep the spaces germ free.3. Suggest That Your Co-Worker Head HomeWhat can you do if a sick co-worker simply refuses to stay at home and the constant coughing and sneezing is distracting you from your work? If youre friendly with the co-worker, you may consider dropping some subtle hints to get him or her to retreat home. You might mention to your co-worker that they arent quite sounding or acting like their normal, healthy self. Politely keep your distance from the co-worker if your routine includes chatting with them around the water cooler and decline any offers to grab lunch until theyre feeling better. Stay glued to your bottle of hand sanitizer and politely offer to share your disinfectant wipes. 4. Consult Human ResourcesIf that co-worker doesnt quite grasp these subtle hints and refuses to go home, its best bedrngnis to take matters into your own hands to avoid a potentially awkward confrontation. You may want to consider a meeting with your human resources department. Let your human resources department know that youre concerned that your own health may be in jeopardy if the sick co-worker remains in the office. Its best left to your human resources department to suggest that your co-worker go home until theyre feeling better or allow the sick individual to work from home instead of at the office.Dealing with sick co-workers is a part of the life of working in an office. Remember to take care of your own space because you can only be responsible for your own actions. Leave it to your human resources department to handle the situation if the sick co-worker becomes a workplace distraction.

ClickTimes headquarters is located in Sa n Francisco, but they also haveoffices in Denver, Austin, and London so Sarah is constantly recruiting in some of the most competitive markets. The topic of todays episode iswhat to hire for other than skill. In Sarahs experience at ClickTime, shes discovered that there are several key characteristics of a great hire that just cant be spotted on a resume. Thankfully, Sarah has some insight on how she evaluates the single characteristic that every successful ClickTime employee must have. Take it away SarahSarah Dabby Hi, Im Sarah, Head of Talent at ClickTime, and Im here to talk about what I look for in candidates. The most important thing we look for in a candidate is empathy. Thats important for two reasons, from the business perspective, our customers are King, so when were developing a new feature, rolling out a new product, or answering customer questions, we always have to keep the customers needs first.Within in company, were a small team, were less than 30 people, so the abili ty to work across departments, communicate really clearly, and go above and beyond the call of duty for teammates is really important.Empathy can be really tough to screen for, so were come up with a couple questions that have really helped us, and hopefully it will help you as well. The first one we ask is Whens the last time you went above and beyond the call of duty?. Now, this doesnt have to be business related, it can be for a friend, for a family member, or even complete stranger, because a lot of times we get the most color and the most interesting perspective from stories that have nothing to do with a candidates work life. The other question we tend to ask is Have you ever failed a colleague, a teammate, or you company?. We ask this because failure is inevitable on some level. We dont expect people to be perfect, we dont expect our candidates to do the right thing every single time. But we do care about how they react. If we have a candidate who just walks away from the expe rience and says Oh, well, it wasnt really my fault it was somebody elses fault, so Im not going to take responsibility for it that really doesnt show that much empathy or really caring about the company. Whereas if someone walks away and they think really hard about it, and they feel really bad about it because they let somebody down, that means they care a lot about their colleagues, their teammates, and the company at large, and that they really want to people around them to succeed. Thats a quality that is really important to us at ClickTime.Im Sarah, and the number one thing we look for at ClickTime is empathy.Josh Tolan Empathy is definitely a very important characteristic to hire for other than skill. Im sure most organizations with customer-facing positions can relate and found Sarahs methods for evaluating this characteristic to be tremendously helpful. The important thing to keep in mind here is that these key characteristics are going to be specific to your company cultur e. So, define these key characteristics and then determine whatmethods youre going to use to evaluate for them in the interview process.I want to thank todays expert, Sarah Dabby for coming on theshow today.
